At SolarTyle, we are clear that a premium, highly aesthetic solar roof depends on every component in the build-up meeting the same standard. That principle extends beyond the solar tile to the battens used to set out and secure the system.
This is why we consistently specify S R Timber's trademarked, BS 5534 graded SRT GOLD® roofing battens across our projects.
Raising the Standard of Solar Roof Installation
Why the Batten Matters
SolarTyle is an integrated roofing system, not a bolt-on product. The final finish is therefore only as good as the structure beneath it. Unlike traditional solar panels, where minor inconsistencies in the roof can be hidden, SolarTyle sits directly within the tile line.
Any variation in batten straightness or quality can affect:
- The visual alignment of the tiles
- The uniformity of the roof finish
- The integrity of the fixing points
- Long-term performance and durability
Put simply, if the battens are not right, the roof will not look right.
Integrated solar depends on a precise, consistent roof build-up.
Our Specification: SRT GOLD®
After early testing and site experience, we made a deliberate decision to standardise on S R Timber's trademarked, BS 5534 graded SRT GOLD® roofing battens.
SRT GOLD® is a correctly graded roofing batten, compliant with BS 5534:2014+A2:2018 and BS 8417:2011+A1:2014 (Preservation of wood), Use Class 2. It is WPA-approved and CCPi-assessed. S R Timber has supplied the UK market for 20 years and manages the process from tree to roof.
We have found that SRT GOLD® consistently delivers:
- Exceptional straightness, reducing variation across the roof plane
- High structural integrity, providing a solid fixing base for SolarTyle
- Uniform sizing and finish, supporting consistent gauge and alignment
- Reliable quality across batches, which is critical on multi-unit developments
Consistent battens create the true fixing line needed for accurate tile alignment.
Tested and Proven on Site
We do not specify products based on theory; we specify them based on what works in real-world installations. Through multiple projects, we have tested different battens and quickly identified that not all are equal.
Variations in cheaper or lower-grade battens can lead to:
- Visible undulations across the roof
- Inconsistent tile seating
- Increased installation time due to adjustments on site
By contrast, SRT GOLD® provides a true, straight fixing line from the outset, allowing installers to work faster and achieve a higher-quality finish.
An Aesthetic-First Approach
SolarTyle is driven by aesthetics as much as performance. Clients choose SolarTyle because they do not want the look of traditional solar panels. They want a roof that:
- Blends seamlessly with surrounding properties
- Maintains the intended architectural design
- Delivers solar without compromise
Every layer of the system must support a clean, uniform roof finish, starting with the battens.
Built for Premium Developments
On developments where planning, appearance and resale value matter, cutting corners on hidden components does not make sense. Specifying SRT GOLD® ensures:
- A premium roof build-up from structure to surface
- Confidence for developers, architects and contractors
- A consistent finish across multiple plots
- Reduced risk of visual defects or call-backs
“We realised early on that if SolarTyle was going to be taken seriously as a premium roofing solution, it had to be installed alongside the best products on the market.
From day one, we've used SRT GOLD® because it gives us a uniform, straight batten every time. That consistency is critical for our system. If you want a roof to look right, it has to start with what's underneath it.”
Liam Dennis, CEO, SolarTyle
Built From the Structure Up
SolarTyle is designed to deliver a high-performance, visually seamless solar roof. Achieving that result is not just about the tiles; it is about the full system.
By specifying SRT GOLD® battens, we ensure that every SolarTyle installation is built on a straight, secure and high-quality foundation: exactly what is needed to deliver the level of finish our clients expect.
For developers and contractors looking to get the best from an integrated solar roof, the message is simple: start with the right products, all the way through the build-up.
